Once Upon A Demons Heart by K.M. Moronova – Review

“But you can only die so many times before all of your hope is stolen away.”

Once Upon A Demons Heart was my first read of K.M. Moronova’s work and I have to say, I was blown away by the beauty in her writing style. The way she writes inner thoughts and feelings is a sensation that rattles you to the bone. You really feel every word and in turn, the depth of the characters, their backgrounds, emotions, trauma and current experiences.

Alira and Kalel, our two main characters both carry deep wounds and heavy burdens and the situation they find themselves in is one of the most intriguing dynamics between characters i’ve ever read. Their story is like nothing i’ve ever read before and often left tears clouding my vision as i tried to read the words. I was cautious going into this as I know K.M. Moronova is known for her dark stories (check your triggers!) but I found this to be the perfect combination of dark themes mixed with fantasy which has been my favourite sub-genre this year. I’ve always been a fantasy reader and a lot of the books can feel like they are all following the same blueprint. Once Upon A Demons Heart re-writes everything you once knew about fantasy and puts a bitch black poetic spin on demons and demi-gods and I loved every second of it.

With gilded blood, pray upon a demon’s heart, for it very well might save you
